Don't Wait Until You're Burned Out to Take Care of Yourself
We tend to be pretty good at taking care of ourselves when something is wrong.
Our shoulders ache, so we finally schedule the massage. Our skin feels dry or looks tired, so we start paying attention to our skincare routine again. We're completely exhausted, so we decide it's time to slow down.
But what if we didn't wait until we reached that point?
Self-care doesn't have to be something we turn to only when we're already running on empty. Sometimes the best time to take care of yourself is when you're feeling perfectly fine.
Pay Attention to the Little Signs
Our bodies are pretty good at letting us know when something needs attention.
Maybe your shoulders are starting to creep toward your ears by the end of the workday. You're not sleeping quite as well. Your skin looks a little dull. Your normal routine has disappeared somewhere between work, family, errands, and everything else on your calendar.
None of those things necessarily mean something is wrong. They're simply little reminders to check in with yourself.
The earlier you notice them, the easier it can be to make small adjustments before you reach the point where you're desperate for a break.
Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be a Big Event
It's easy to picture self-care as an entire spa day, a weekend away, or something else that requires a lot of time.
It doesn't.
Sometimes it's going to bed a little earlier.
Taking a walk without your phone.
Actually using the skincare products sitting on your bathroom counter.
Lighting your favorite candle at the end of a long day.
Drinking enough water.
Scheduling the massage you've been thinking about before your neck starts hurting.
Small things count.
The goal isn't to create another list of things you "should" be doing. It's to find the things that help you feel more like yourself and make room for them.
Put Yourself on the Calendar, Too
As fall begins, calendars have a way of filling quickly.
School starts. Activities return. Work gets busier. Weekends fill up. Before long, the slower rhythm of summer can feel very far away.
We schedule appointments, meetings, practices, dinners, and everything everyone else needs from us.
Sometimes we need to put ourselves on the calendar, too.
That might mean scheduling a massage once a month. Planning your next facial before you leave your current appointment. Keeping up with regular waxing appointments instead of trying to squeeze one in at the last minute.
When self-care becomes part of your routine, it doesn't have to wait until you've reached your limit.
Find What Works for You
Self-care isn't one-size-fits-all.
For one person, an hour-long massage might be exactly what they need to recharge. Someone else may look forward to a facial and the chance to completely unplug. For someone else, simply maintaining a skincare routine or lighting a candle after everyone else has gone to bed may be enough to create a small moment of calm.
There isn't a "right" way to do it.
The best kind of self-care is the kind that actually helps you feel your best.
Take the Reset With You
Throughout August, we've talked a lot about resetting.
We've talked about listening to your body, caring for summer skin, keeping skin healthy before and after waxing, and finding small ways to slow down before fall begins.
Our August Reset promotions may be coming to an end, but the idea behind them isn't.
As we head into September, try not to wait until you're exhausted, overwhelmed, or uncomfortable to give yourself some attention.
Check in with yourself.
Notice the little things.
Make time for what helps you recharge.
And remember that taking care of yourself doesn't have to be something you earn after you've taken care of everyone else.
Sometimes, it can simply be part of the routine.
