Ultimate Summer Skincare Guide: Protecting Your Skin with SPF

As summer in Seattle starts heating up, it's imperative to take care of our skin. Seasonal skincare is crucial for everyone to maintain general skin health and prevent early signs of aging. Let’s dive into some summer beauty tips.

Sunscreen: A Summer Essential

First up, sunscreen. If you’re focused on summer skin health, broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must-have in your sun care essentials. Wearing sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin’s appearance and health at any age. Regular use of sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging.

Understanding SPF

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) on your sunscreen indicates how well it shields you from UVB rays, which are notorious for causing sunburns and increasing the risk of skin cancer. While UVB is a major concern, it's not the only type of UV light. UVA rays contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. For comprehensive protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that defends against both UVB and UVA rays. Keep your skin safe and radiant this summer!

How Much SPF Do I Need?

It's important to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for effective protection. Dermatologists, including Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil from New York, recommend this "magic number." To put it in perspective, SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks around 97%.

For optimal protection, apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin every day. On days when you’ll be outside for a long time—whether golfing, lounging at the beach, or swimming—start with a base coat of SPF 30 about 30 minutes before heading out. Reapply every two hours, and remember to reapply after swimming. Johns Hopkins Medicine suggests using at least SPF 60 if you are spending extended periods outdoors.

No Sunscreen Can Offer Complete Protection

It’s crucial to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, wear protective clothing like hats and sun-protective swimwear, and seek shade whenever possible.

But My Makeup Has SPF...

Even if your makeup boasts a high SPF, you would need much more makeup than you typically use to reach the labeled SPF. Do not rely solely on your makeup for daily sun protection. Apply sunscreen right before your first layer of makeup. A typical summer morning skin routine could be as simple as a cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and then makeup.

How Much Sunscreen Do I Need?

Applying the correct amount of sunscreen is as important as its strength. For your face and neck, use a nickel-sized dollop—about two-finger lengths of sunscreen. For the rest of your body, use about two tablespoons of sunscreen, roughly a shot glass’s worth. To get all the SPF benefits, ensure you apply the correct amount and SPF strength for your activity level throughout the day.

Why Sunscreen?

We often hear about the importance of sunscreen, but why exactly? It protects your skin from UV rays, which cause skin cancer and signs of aging. Did you know skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US? UV rays can cause wrinkles, dark spots, and a blotchy complexion.

While there are many sun care essentials to protect our skin, avoiding direct sun exposure is the most effective. However, when you must go outside, wear protective clothing like sunhats, visors, and caps. Even with these precautions, sunscreen remains the last line of defense. The sun never takes a break, so you shouldn’t either.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

Sunscreen choice is personal. If one brand or type doesn’t work for you, consider switching. The sunscreen for your face should differ from that for your body due to differences in skin thickness, sensitivity, and oil content.

What to Consider:

  • SPF Strength:  A minimum of 30 is recommended.

  • Mineral vs. Chemical: Chemical sunscreens are easier to rub in and may be better for acne-prone skin. Mineral sunscreens are ideal for sensitive skin and start working immediately.

  • Key Ingredients: Look for niacinamide for calming skin and improving tone, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and vitamin C for brightness.

  • Broad Spectrum: Ensure the label mentions protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

What DK Spa Offers

At DK Spa, we offer two PCA brand sunscreens: Weightless Protection SPF 45 and Hydrator Plus SPF 30. The Weightless Protection is broad-spectrum, lightweight, and fast-absorbing, suitable for most skin types. Hydrator Plus, my personal favorite, is also broad-spectrum and best for dry or dehydrated skin.

Sunscreen is integrated into our facial services. One of the final steps in our facials is applying sunscreen, so you leave protected and ready for the day. Depending on your skin needs, I will choose between PCA Weightless Protection and Hydrator Plus.

Adding this small step to your daily routine can significantly impact your skin health. Remember to research and find your favorite sunscreen, considering strength, broad-spectrum coverage, and whether it's mineral or chemical. Still unsure? See me for a complimentary consultation. I’d love to help you reach your skin goals.
