You Don’t Have to Earn Rest: Making Space to Slow Down

A guest wearing a cozy white robe and slippers beside cucumber water and refreshments during the Sanctuary Experience at DK Spa in Lynnwood.

How many times have you told yourself, “I'll relax when I get everything done”?

I know I've done it! There's always something that needs attention, whether it's work, laundry, errands, family, or that never-ending to-do list. And sometimes, even when we finally have a few minutes to ourselves, it's hard to enjoy them because we're thinking about everything we should be doing.

I've been thinking about that lately, especially as we head into the busy holiday season.

Why do we make ourselves feel like we have to earn a little time to rest?

There's Always Something Else to Do

The older I get, the more I realize that the to-do list is never really finished. You can cross off ten things, and somehow five more appear.

And if we're waiting until everything is done before we take a break, well, we might be waiting forever!

I think sometimes we make self-care more complicated than it needs to be. We picture a whole day to ourselves, a vacation, or some big plan that takes time and money.

But it doesn't always have to be that.

Sometimes it's enjoying your morning coffee without checking your phone. Taking a walk because it's a beautiful day. Sitting down with a good book. Or just giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for a little while.

Those moments matter, too.

Learning to Slow Down

Something I notice with my clients at DK Spa is that everyone arrives in a different frame of mind.

Some people walk through the door ready to relax. Others have just come from work, battled traffic, or squeezed their appointment into an already busy day.

And I completely understand!

It's not always easy to switch off everything going on in your head just because you've walked into a spa.

That's actually part of what inspired me to make some changes to the experience at DK Spa.

With the Sanctuary Experience, I've built a little breathing room into appointments. There's time to settle in before your service, enjoy your massage or facial, and then have a few quiet moments afterward before heading back out into the world.

I wanted the entire appointment to feel like time that's truly yours, not just another thing on your schedule.

A Little Reminder

With the holidays getting closer, I know life is only going to get busier for a lot of us.

So here's something I hope you'll remember, and something I'm reminding myself of, too.

You don't have to finish everything before you take a break.

You don't have to feel guilty for sitting down when there's still laundry to fold.

And you don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted to decide you need a little time for yourself.

Whether it's five minutes with your coffee, an afternoon doing something you love, or a visit to DK Spa, I hope you'll find a little space to slow down.

You don't have to earn it.
